Land was granted to Auckland's Jewish community in 1842 — consecrated Jewish burial ground before there was a Jewish building in which to pray.

The first recorded Jewish burial there took place in 1844: Catherine Nathan, the infant daughter of David and Rosetta Nathan.

A mortuary chapel later stood in the Jewish section. A formal Chevra Kadisha was established in Auckland in 1906.
