Foundation stone laid on 18 December 1884 by David Nathan.

Consecrated on 9 November 1885 by Rabbi Samuel Goldstein, with a documented capacity of 225 men and 150 women.

The congregation's earlier homes were the loft above David Nathan's Shortland Street premises, then a leased building at Emily Place from 1855, purchased in 1862.
